Beet chlorosis virus, formally classified as Polerovirus mabyv, is a significant viral pathogen affecting sugar beet production worldwide. As a member of the Polerovirus genus, this virus restricts itself to the phloem tissue of the host plants, leading to systemic infection that severely impairs plant health.

The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Amaranthaceae family, specifically sugar beet, beetroot, and mangel-wurzel. The pathogen also thrives in various wild weed species, which serve as overwintering reservoirs and facilitate the persistence of the virus in the environment between growing seasons.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as distinct chlorosis, starting from the leaf margins and advancing inward. The infected foliage often becomes thick, leathery, and brittle. A critical visual symptom is the retention of green color in the leaf veins while the intervening tissue turns bright yellow.

The transmission of the virus is entirely dependent on aphid vectors, with Myzus persicae (green peach aphid) being the most efficient carrier. The virus is acquired in a persistent manner, meaning the aphid remains infectious for the remainder of its lifespan once it has fed on an infected plant.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on minimizing aphid populations. Key preventive measures include early-season insecticide applications, planting in areas isolated from previous beet crops, and aggressive weed management to eliminate alternative host plants near the production site.
