Description
The causative agent of this disease is the Maize yellow mosaic virus, classified within the Polerovirus genus. This virus targets the plant's phloem, causing significant disruption to the translocation of nutrients, which effectively stunts growth and weakens the overall vigor of the maize crop.
Maize (Zea mays) is the primary economic host for this pathogen. While it is highly specialized, the virus can also persist in various wild grasses. These weeds serve as critical inoculum sources, facilitating the survival of the virus during the off-season when no crop is present in the field.
Symptoms of the infection typically include characteristic yellowing (chlorosis) along the leaf margins, followed by inward curling or rolling of the leaves. Infected plants often display severe stunting, reduced ear size, and poor grain fill, leading to substantial yield losses in susceptible commercial hybrids.
The transmission mechanism is purely biological, involving aphid vectors. The virus is persistent, meaning once an aphid acquires the virus by feeding on an infected plant, it remains capable of transmitting the pathogen for the remainder of its lifespan, making even low aphid populations a potential threat.
Integrated pest management is the only effective defense strategy. This includes the systematic application of insecticides to manage vector populations, the use of certified healthy seeds, and the removal of alternative weed hosts. Additionally, adjusting sowing dates to avoid the peak flight periods of aphids is highly recommended for reducing the incidence of infection.
