Poleroviruses are a genus of plant viruses belonging to the family Solemoviridae. These pathogens are strictly phloem-limited, meaning they colonize and replicate exclusively within the sieve tubes of the plant vascular system. They are not transmitted mechanically through sap but are spread exclusively in a persistent manner by specific insect vectors, primarily aphids.
The genus includes a wide range of viruses affecting major agricultural crops. Significant examples include the Beet yellows virus (BYV), Potato leafroll virus (PLRV), and Cereal yellow dwarf viruses (BYDV). These viruses are known to infect a variety of crops, ranging from vegetables and cereals to industrial technical plants, causing widespread agricultural damage.
Typical symptoms of a polerovirus infection include systemic chlorosis, yellowing, or reddening of leaves, often starting from the lower canopy, and characteristic leaf curling or rolling. Infected plants often show stunted growth and poor root system development, as the virus interferes with the translocation of sugars and nutrients from the leaves to the storage organs.
The development and spread of these viruses are closely linked to the population dynamics of their aphid vectors. The viruses often overwinter in perennial weed hosts. Favorable weather conditions, such as warm and dry springs, facilitate the rapid increase of winged aphids, which acquire the virus from infected hosts and transmit it to healthy crops while feeding, leading to severe outbreaks.
The economic impact of poleroviruses is reflected in significant yield losses and degradation of product quality. Comprehensive management strategies are essential for control:
