Tobacco necrotic dwarf virus (TNDV), taxonomically classified as a Polerovirus, is a significant viral pathogen that poses a threat to tobacco production. This virus resides in the phloem of the host plant, disrupting the transport of photosynthates and leading to systemic physiological stress throughout the plant structure.
The primary hosts for this virus are plants within the Nicotiana genus. The virus causes severe stunting and deformation, which directly affects the yield potential and the commercial value of the leaf harvest. Due to its systemic nature, once a plant is infected, it remains a source of inoculum for the entire growing season.
Typical symptoms include the downward rolling of leaf margins, severe chlorosis, and the development of brittle leaves. Affected tobacco plants show clear signs of dwarfing, with shortened internodes and a reduced canopy size. In severe cases, the entire crop may appear stunted, leading to significant economic losses for producers.
Transmission occurs exclusively through aphid vectors in a persistent manner. The virus is acquired by aphids while feeding on infected plant sap and is then transmitted to healthy plants.
