Description

Beet rhizomania is caused by the Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV), a member of the genus Pomovirus. It is a highly destructive soil-borne disease that severely affects the root architecture of sugar beet plants, preventing the normal development of the taproot.

The primary host for this virus is sugar beet, although fodder and garden beets can also be susceptible. The virus is obligately transmitted by the plasmodiophorid Polymyxa betae, a soil-inhabiting organism. These zoospores can survive in the soil for over a decade in the form of resting spores.

The most distinctive symptom is the proliferation of thin, lateral rootlets, commonly referred to as "root beard," while the main taproot remains stunted and constricted. The foliage often shows yellowing along the veins, stunted growth, and a tendency for the plants to wilt rapidly during dry or hot periods.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high soil moisture and moderate temperatures. Under these conditions, Polymyxa betae releases motile zoospores that infect the root hairs of the beet plants, effectively inoculating the host with the virus.

The economic impact of rhizomania is severe, often resulting in significant yield losses and a drastic reduction in sucrose content. Because the virus persists in the soil for so long, infected fields become unsuitable for the production of traditional sugar beet varieties for many years.
