Pomovirus viciae is a viral pathogen belonging to the Pomovirus genus that primarily affects leguminous plants. The virus is characterized by rod-shaped particles containing single-stranded RNA. As a systemic plant pathogen, it disrupts host cell physiology, leading to reduced productivity and impaired development of the vascular system.
The host range of this virus includes common vetch (Vicia sativa), peas, and other related leguminous crops. It is of significant concern in agricultural regions where these crops are frequently grown, as the pathogen can persist in the soil for several years, making eradication difficult once the soil becomes infested.
Symptoms of Pomovirus viciae infection typically include mosaic patterns on leaves, interveinal chlorosis, and general stunting of the plant. Infected plants may exhibit stunted growth, reduced leaf size, and lower overall biomass compared to healthy specimens. In some cases, leaves may become wrinkled or distorted, depending on the severity of the infection.
The transmission of this virus is largely mediated by soil-borne fungal vectors, specifically plasmodiophorids like Polymyxa species. These fungi act as reservoirs, harbouring the virus in their resting spores within the soil. Additionally, mechanical transmission can occur via contaminated farm machinery or during cultural practices that involve wounding the plant tissues.
The economic impact of the virus includes substantial losses in forage yield and grain production. To mitigate the risk, producers should prioritize integrated disease management, including the use of certified healthy seeds, strict adherence to crop rotation cycles to starve the soil-borne vectors, and maintaining weed control to eliminate alternative hosts for the virus.
