Description

Pospiviroids are a genus of plant pathogenic viroids characterized by a small, circular, single-stranded RNA molecule without a protein coat. Despite their simple structure, these agents are highly infectious and capable of causing significant metabolic disruptions in their host plants, leading to severe agricultural damage.

The primary hosts of this genus are species within the Solanaceae family, most notably potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. Certain ornamental plants, such as chrysanthemums and petunias, are also susceptible to infection. Because they pose a major economic threat, many countries classify specific members of this genus, such as the potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd), as quarantine pests.

Symptoms of infection are frequently systemic and can mimic other viral or nutritional disorders. Key indicators include:

  • Stunting of the entire plant and shortening of internodes;
  • Malformed, spindle-shaped, or cracked tubers and fruits;
  • Chlorosis, leaf distortion, and necrosis of stems;
  • Reduction in total crop yield and significant decline in product quality.

Transmission occurs primarily through mechanical contact, including the use of contaminated pruning tools, machinery, or even by workers handling plants. Furthermore, Pospiviroids can be spread via infected seeds and pollen. Due to their high stability, they can persist in plant debris and soil, facilitating re-infection in subsequent growing seasons.

Management of Pospiviroids relies entirely on preventative measures, as no curative chemical treatments exist. Farmers must prioritize the use of certified, viroid-free plant material, implement strict sanitation protocols for equipment, and remove and destroy infected plant tissues promptly to limit the spread of the pathogen within the field or greenhouse environment.
