Potato spindle tuber viroid (Pospiviroid alphairesinis) is a highly infectious pathogen that causes systemic disease in solanaceous plants, most notably in potatoes and tomatoes. As a viroid, it lacks a protein coat and consists solely of a short strand of circular RNA, which allows it to hijack the host's cellular machinery to replicate efficiently and cause severe physiological disruption within the plant.

The economic impact of this pathogen is substantial, as it significantly reduces yield and degrades the quality of tubers and fruits. Affected crops often show stunted growth and poor fruit set, leading to major financial losses for growers. Furthermore, since the viroid is easily transmitted through seed tubers, it poses a long-term threat to farm productivity if not managed through rigorous phytosanitary practices.
