Unlike traditional viruses, this pathogen consists solely of a small, circular single-stranded RNA molecule. It lacks a protein capsid, making it highly dependent on the host plant's enzymatic machinery for its replication.
The primary host for this viroid is the coleus plant (Solenostemon scutellarioides). While it mainly affects this specific genus, it can persist in various cultivars and occasionally in related species of the Lamiaceae family. Its ability to remain latent in host tissues complicates identification in commercial plant production.
Symptoms of Pospiviroid latenscolumneae infection vary depending on the host variety and environmental conditions. Common indicators include leaf mottling, chlorosis, and stunted growth.
