Description
Potexviruses are a significant genus of plant-infecting viruses characterized by their flexible, filamentous structure and non-enveloped RNA genome. As systemic pathogens, they invade the vascular system of the host, leading to disrupted physiology and substantial yield losses in various agricultural, horticultural, and ornamental plants worldwide. They are highly contagious and persist effectively in plant debris and on surfaces.
The host range of the genus Potexvirus is remarkably broad. Major economic crops, including potatoes (e.g., Potato Virus X), tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and various ornamental flowers like lilies, are frequently infected. The economic impact is often twofold: direct reduction in the quality and quantity of the harvest, and the physiological weakening of the plants, making them more susceptible to secondary fungal or bacterial infections.
Symptoms are indicative of systemic infection and typically manifest as mosaic patterns, chlorotic mottling, leaf crinkling, stunting, and overall chlorosis. In some sensitive cultivars, the infection may lead to necrosis or significant deformation of the plant architecture. However, because the symptoms can sometimes be mild or latent, field identification often requires specialized laboratory testing such as ELISA or PCR.
Transmission of potexviruses is primarily mechanical. This includes the transfer of infectious sap via contaminated agricultural machinery, pruning shears, harvesting tools, and physical contact between neighboring plants. Because these viruses do not require a biological vector like an aphid or whitefly to move between hosts, they can spread rapidly through a field during routine cultivation tasks.
Since there are no chemical pesticides to cure viral infections, prevention is the only viable management strategy. Essential practices include:
- Strict adherence to certified virus-free seed or tuber programs.
- Rigorous sanitation protocols, including the sterilization of tools between rows.
- Removal and destruction of symptomatic plants as soon as they are identified.
- Management of alternative weed hosts that harbor the virus during off-seasons.
- Implementation of crop rotation to break the cycle of infection in the soil and residues.
