Bamboo mosaic

Potexvirus bambusae is a viral pathogen that significantly impacts the health and growth of various bamboo species. Belonging to the Potexvirus genus, this virus disrupts vital cellular processes, leading to widespread physiological decline in affected specimens.

The host range is primarily limited to Bambusoideae. The virus infects plants in diverse environments, including nurseries, botanical gardens, and commercial bamboo plantations, often leading to reduced vigor and productivity.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as classic mosaic patterns on the foliage, including chlorotic spots, streaking, and systemic yellowing. In severe stages, plants exhibit stunted shoot development, leaf curling, and progressive necrosis that leads to canopy thinning.

The virus is primarily transmitted through mechanical transmission, such as pruning with contaminated tools, direct contact between infected and healthy plants, and occasionally through the distribution of vegetative propagules. High planting density and humid conditions facilitate the viral movement within a clump.

Effective management relies heavily on preventative strategies. As there are no curative chemical treatments for viral plant diseases, the focus must remain on strictly maintaining tool hygiene, enforcing quarantine protocols for new plants, and the immediate rogueing of symptomatic individuals to prevent further spread.
