Vanilla potexvirus (Potexvirus ecsvanillae) is a viral pathogen that affects various species of the genus Vanilla. Classified within the Potexvirus genus, this virus is characterized by its ability to spread rapidly throughout the plant's vascular system, causing systemic infections that can persist for the entire life of the host plant.

The primary host for this virus is Vanilla planifolia, the most commercially significant species cultivated for vanilla bean production. Since the crop is primarily propagated vegetatively, the virus easily spreads through infected cuttings, which poses a severe risk to the long-term viability of vanilla plantations globally.

Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as mosaic patterns, chlorotic spots, or streaks on the leaves. In more advanced stages, the foliage may show signs of distortion and curling. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, reduced vigor, and a marked decrease in flower production, which directly impacts the economic yield of the vanilla harvest.

The transmission of this potexvirus is largely mechanical. It spreads through agricultural tools used for pruning, training, or harvesting if they are not sanitized between plants. Furthermore, close contact between healthy and infected plants, or the movement of contaminated sap by workers, facilitates the rapid spread of the pathogen across the plantation area.

Effective management relies heavily on preventative cultural practices, as there is no cure for established viral infections. Key strategies include:

  • Sourcing certified disease-free planting material.
  • Disinfecting pruning tools with bleach or specialized virucides between every plant.
  • Rogueing and destroying symptomatic plants immediately.
  • Practicing strict hygiene measures to prevent contact transmission during plantation maintenance.
