Description
Lagenaria potexvirus (Potexvirus lagenariae) is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the genus Potexvirus. This disease primarily affects members of the Cucurbitaceae family, causing systemic infections that disrupt normal plant physiology and significantly reduce agricultural productivity in affected crops.
The host range of the virus includes various cucurbits, such as lagenaria, squash, cucumber, melon, and watermelon. The virus colonizes the plant's vascular system, rapidly spreading from the site of infection to younger leaves and developing fruits. It is particularly problematic in protected cultivation environments where high plant density facilitates transmission.
The primary symptom is a distinct mosaic pattern on the leaves, characterized by alternating dark and light green patches. Affected plants often exhibit stunting, leaf curling, and structural deformity. As the disease progresses, fruits may develop irregular shapes, mottling, or reduced size, making them unsuitable for market distribution and drastically lowering overall yield quality.
Transmission occurs predominantly through mechanical means. The virus is easily spread by handling infected plants and then touching healthy ones, or by using contaminated pruning shears and other gardening tools. While insect vectors may contribute to mechanical wounding, the virus is primarily transmitted through the physical transfer of sap, which is common during routine cultivation practices.
Management of this virus relies entirely on prophylactic measures, as there are no chemical agents available to cure established viral infections. Effective strategies include:
- Sterilizing all gardening tools with recommended disinfectants between plants.
- Roguely and destroying infected plants to prevent the source of secondary spread.
- Implementing strict sanitation protocols within greenhouses.
- Controlling aphid and other pest populations to minimize mechanical tissue damage.
- Selecting certified disease-free seeds and resistant cultivars where available.
