Malva potexvirus (Potexvirus malvae) is a viral pathogen that belongs to the Potexvirus genus. It causes systemic infections in various plants, particularly within the Malvaceae family. Like all members of its group, this virus relies on the host's cellular machinery to replicate, causing metabolic disruptions that negatively impact the overall health of the plant.

The primary hosts of this virus are ornamental species such as hollyhocks (Alcea), mallows (Malva), lavatera, and sometimes hibiscus. The virus can persist within these hosts for long periods, often remaining asymptomatic under favorable growth conditions, which facilitates its undetected spread across nurseries and gardens.

The characteristic symptoms of infection typically include mosaic patterns on the leaves, which present as yellow or light green spots, vein clearing, and sometimes necrotic rings. Affected plants may show stunted growth, distorted leaf shapes, and a reduction in flower production, which is a major concern for commercial and hobbyist growers.

Transmission occurs primarily through mechanical contact, such as contaminated pruning shears, contact between infected and healthy foliage, or handling. Insects that possess piercing-sucking mouthparts may also act as vectors, transporting the virus while feeding on plant sap, though mechanical transmission is the most frequent route in cultivation.

There is no known cure for Malva potexvirus once a plant is infected, making prevention the most critical management strategy:

  • Sterilize all gardening tools thoroughly between uses on different plants.
  • Source planting material from reputable, virus-tested suppliers.
  • Regularly monitor the garden for any signs of mosaic patterns or leaf deformity.
  • Promptly rogue and destroy symptomatic plants to eliminate the source of the virus.
  • Control populations of potential insect vectors through integrated pest management practices.
