Clover mosaic virus is a phytopathogen that causes viral infections in a wide range of leguminous plants. As a member of the Potexvirus genus, this virus relies on flexible filamentous virions to invade host cells, systematically spreading throughout the plant tissue and disrupting essential biological functions.
The host range primarily includes species within the Fabaceae family, such as clover (Trifolium spp.), alfalfa, peas, and various beans. The virus can also persist in asymptomatic weed hosts, which serve as reservoirs for the pathogen, facilitating its survival between growing seasons.
The diagnostic symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic mosaic patterns on leaves, which may be accompanied by tissue malformation and stunted growth. In severe cases, the photosynthetic efficiency of the plant is significantly impaired, leading to yield losses and reduced vegetative vigor of the crop.
Transmission of the virus occurs primarily through mechanical means, such as physical contact between plants or contamination via agricultural tools.
