Description
Potyvirus adiuris is a dangerous plant viral pathogen belonging to the genus Potyvirus within the Potyviridae family. Like most members of this group, the virus consists of a single-stranded RNA genome that systemically infects the host plant, disrupting metabolic pathways and nutrient transport throughout the vascular system.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include various species within the Solanaceae and Fabaceae families, covering both vegetable and forage crops. The disease is characterized by rapid dissemination during the peak growing season, posing a severe threat to commercial yields in both open fields and greenhouse conditions.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as distinct mosaic patterns on leaves, leaf distortion, and general stunting of the entire plant. Chlorosis, curling, and in severe cases, necrotic spotting and premature tissue necrosis are commonly observed, which significantly decreases the overall photosynthetic capacity of the crop.
Transmission occurs primarily through non-persistent vectors, most notably various species of aphids (e.g., Myzus persicae). Additionally, mechanical transmission plays a significant role, where the virus is spread via contaminated agricultural tools, contact between infected and healthy foliage, or through the use of infected propagative material.
Effective management of Potyvirus adiuris relies on an integrated approach since there are no direct chemical treatments to cure viral plant infections. Preventive strategies include:
