Wild onion mosaic virus (Potyvirus alliumagrestis) is a significant viral pathogen within the Potyvirus genus that impacts various species of the Allium genus. This virus acts as an obligate parasite, infecting host tissues and disrupting normal metabolic processes, which leads to stunted growth and reduced crop vigor.
The primary host range includes cultivated onions, garlic, and wild Allium species. Given the systemic nature of the infection, the virus often persists in the bulb tissue, serving as a primary source of inoculum for subsequent growing seasons and facilitating long-distance transmission through traded planting stocks.
Symptoms of the disease typically manifest as a light and dark green mosaic pattern on the leaves. Infected plants may exhibit streaking, leaf distortion, and general chlorosis. In severe cases, the entire plant architecture becomes deformed, leading to poor bulb development and significantly lower market value for the harvested produce.
Transmission in field conditions is primarily mediated by aphid species, which act as vectors, acquiring the virus during brief probes into the epidermal layers of infected plants.
