Amaranth mosaic virus (Potyvirus amaranthi) is a member of the genus Potyvirus that specifically targets members of the Amaranthaceae family. As a viral pathogen, it relies on the host's cellular machinery to replicate, leading to physiological distress. It is recognized as a significant constraint in regions where amaranth is commercially grown for grain or forage, causing systemic infection throughout the plant.

The host range is primarily focused on the Amaranthus genus. While commercial amaranth is the main focus, many wild relative species serve as persistent reservoirs for the virus. This ecological connection makes it difficult to eradicate the pathogen from agricultural areas, as the virus can survive in nearby weeds and bridge the gap between growing seasons.

Symptoms of infection are usually distinct and include mosaic patterns of light and dark green on leaves, leaf malformation, and stunted overall growth. In severe cases, the infected plant may exhibit systemic chlorosis and a significant reduction in biomass production. These symptomatic changes inevitably lead to a reduced yield, affecting both grain weight and the viability of the seeds for future planting.

The transmission of this virus occurs mainly through insect vectors, specifically aphids. In a non-persistent manner, the aphid acquires the virus by feeding on an infected plant and transmits it rapidly to a healthy plant. The spread is highly correlated with the activity and density of aphids during the warm seasons. Environmental conditions such as drought, which often leads to increased aphid migration, exacerbate the infection rates.

Preventative management is the only viable approach to controlling Potyvirus amaranthi. Agricultural practices should prioritize:

  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to control aphid populations through timely application of insecticides.
  • Rigorous weed control in and around fields to remove virus reservoirs.
  • Sourcing certified, virus-free planting seeds.
  • Implementing field rotation or fallowing to break the infection cycle.
  • Early roguing of infected plants to reduce the initial viral inoculum within the field.
