Description
Leek yellow stripe virus (LYSV), often documented as Potyvirus ampeloprasi, is a significant viral pathogen that belongs to the genus Potyvirus. This disease systemically infects plant tissues, causing severe physiological disturbances that impede the plant's ability to develop normally and produce marketable yields.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include various Allium species, most notably leeks, common onions, garlic, and shallots. Because these crops are economically significant, the presence of the virus can cause devastating financial losses for growers, especially in regions where commercial production is concentrated.
Symptoms are distinct and usually include chlorotic stripes or streaks that run parallel to the veins on the leaves. As the infection progresses, the leaves often turn pale yellow, lose their upright structure, and start to collapse. Infected plants are characteristically stunted, which significantly affects the bulb size and the quality of the harvest.
Transmission occurs primarily through aphid vectors in a non-persistent manner. This means the virus can be acquired and transmitted by the insect within seconds of probing an infected plant. Additionally, human activities such as mechanical handling of plants or the use of infected vegetative propagules (sets or cloves) are major pathways for the rapid spread of the pathogen within a field.
Management of the disease requires an integrated approach. Since there are no direct chemical treatments to cure an already infected plant, focus must be on preventative strategies. This includes using certified virus-free seeds and planting material, implementing strict weed control measures to remove virus reservoirs, and applying insecticide treatments to effectively manage aphid populations during the peak migration periods.
