Angelica mosaic virus (Potyvirus angelicae) is a viral pathogen belonging to the Potyvirus genus, which poses a significant threat to plants of the Apiaceae family. This virus disrupts the normal physiological development of the host, leading to severe morphological changes and physiological stress in affected crops.

The primary host for this pathogen is the angelica plant (Angelica archangelica) and related species within the umbrella family. Being a systemic disease, the virus spreads through the plant's phloem, eventually affecting both the root system and the aerial parts, which is particularly detrimental for species harvested for their root bioactive compounds.

Symptoms typically manifest as mottling, chlorotic mosaic patterns, and leaf deformation. Infected specimens often exhibit stunted growth, reduced height, and distorted foliage development. In severe cases, the infected plants lose their vigor, which leads to a substantial decrease in both raw biomass yield and the quality of the pharmacological raw material.

The disease is primarily disseminated by insect vectors, specifically aphid species. The virus is transmitted in a non-persistent manner, meaning that aphids can acquire the virus and transmit it to healthy plants during brief feeding probes. Mechanical transmission through contaminated equipment or handling during pruning and harvesting operations also contributes to its local spread.

Management and prevention focus on breaking the transmission cycle. This includes applying strict insect control measures (targeting aphids), utilizing certified virus-free seeds or seedlings, and implementing a rigorous sanitation program for agricultural tools. Keeping the field free from weeds that act as alternative hosts is also a critical practice to mitigate the risk of primary viral introduction.
