Celery mosaic virus (CeMV), belonging to the Potyvirus genus, is a significant plant pathogen that causes mosaic disease in various crops. It is an RNA virus that systemically infects host plants, leading to physiological disruption and reduced photosynthetic efficiency, ultimately impacting the overall vitality and yield of the plant.

The virus primarily affects members of the Apiaceae family, most notably celery (Apium graveolens). Other potential hosts include parsley, parsnips, carrots, and a variety of wild umbelliferous weeds. These wild hosts are critical for the virus's survival during periods when the main crop is not present, acting as reservoirs for subsequent seasonal outbreaks.

The hallmark symptoms of infection include a distinct light and dark green mosaic pattern on the leaves. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, leaf curling, and distortion of leaflets. In severe cases, the stems may become brittle and deformed, and the development of root systems or taproots is severely hindered, leading to significant economic loss for commercial growers.

Transmission occurs primarily through aphid vectors in a non-persistent manner. When an aphid probes an infected plant, it picks up viral particles on its stylet and can transmit them immediately to the next healthy plant it feeds upon. Because the virus does not require an incubation period within the insect, it can spread rapidly across a field even with low aphid population densities.

Management of the Celery mosaic virus is challenging because there are no curative treatments available for infected plants. Consequently, control must be preventive and focus on mitigating risk:

  • Sourcing certified virus-free transplants or seeds for new planting seasons.
  • Implementing rigorous weed control programs to eliminate wild reservoirs of the virus.
  • Managing aphid populations with systemic and contact insecticides early in the season.
  • Maintaining adequate spatial separation between infected areas and new fields to prevent transmission.
  • Rogueing and disposing of symptomatic plants immediately to reduce the source of inoculum within the field.
