Description
Peanut potyvirus (Potyvirus arachidis) is a significant viral disease affecting legume crops, particularly peanuts. As a member of the Potyviridae family, this virus consists of positive-sense single-stranded RNA, causing systemic infections that disturb the physiological processes of the host plant. The virus relies on plant resources to replicate, ultimately leading to reduced agricultural yield.
The primary host for this pathogen is the cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea). However, the virus can also infect a variety of leguminous weeds and secondary crops, which serve as crucial reservoirs. The damage caused by the virus is detrimental to both quantitative and qualitative parameters, leading to stunted pods and low-quality kernels that may not meet market standards.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as mosaic patterns on the foliage, including chlorotic spots, streaks, and vein banding. In many cases, leaf deformation and crinkling occur, accompanied by an overall reduction in plant vigor. Severely infected plants exhibit distinct dwarfing, reduced internode length, and may suffer from flower abortion, which directly impacts the potential harvest.
Transmission of the virus occurs via non-persistent mechanisms, mainly through aphid vectors. As aphids feed on infected plants, they acquire the virus and transmit it to healthy plants in subsequent feedings. Mechanical transmission and contaminated seed lots also play roles in the disease cycle. Environmental conditions that favor aphid population growth, such as mild temperatures, usually correlate with higher disease incidence.
Effective management and prevention of the disease require a multi-faceted agronomic strategy:
- Utilizing only virus-free and certified disease-resistant seeds.
- Implementing regular monitoring and control of aphid populations using targeted insecticides.
- Maintaining field hygiene by removing weeds that act as virus reservoirs.
- Practicing crop rotation to break the cycle of viral persistence in the field.
- Establishing spatial isolation between new fields and previously infected areas.
