Basella mosaic virus is a plant viral disease caused by a pathogen belonging to the Potyvirus genus, known as Potyvirus basellae. This virus causes systemic infection, meaning the pathogen spreads throughout the plant's vascular system, causing metabolic disruption and affecting the development of the entire plant.
The virus primarily affects Basella alba, commonly referred to as Malabar spinach. While it is a specialized pathogen, it can significantly impact the productivity of this leafy vegetable crop, particularly in tropical regions where the plant is grown for both culinary and medicinal purposes.
The symptoms of this virus are characterized by distinct mosaic patterns on the leaves, featuring alternating shades of green and yellowish spots.
