Batata latent virus (BaLV) is a plant pathogen classified under the Potyvirus genus. It is characterized by its tendency to infect sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) without causing severe, immediate symptoms, often remaining cryptic within the host plant tissues for extended periods.

The virus primarily affects sweet potato crops. Its biological cycle is deeply integrated with the plant's vascular system, allowing it to move systemically from leaves to the storage roots, which poses a significant risk when these roots are used for propagation in subsequent growing seasons.

Symptoms of this disease are typically very mild or entirely absent, hence the term "latent." When symptoms do appear under environmental stress, they may manifest as faint mosaic patterns, leaf yellowing, or slight growth reduction. Due to the lack of distinct symptoms, farmers often fail to realize their fields are infected until yield reduction becomes apparent.

Transmission occurs through two primary routes: the use of infected vegetative cuttings or roots, and mechanical transmission via aphid vectors. The virus is transmitted in a non-persistent manner by aphids, which can acquire and transmit the viral particles within seconds or minutes during feeding activities.

Management of Batata latent virus relies heavily on sanitation and exclusion.

  • Use certified virus-free seed tubers and slips.
  • Implement tissue culture propagation to ensure plants are pathogen-free.
