Tamarillo mosaic virus (Potyvirus betaceum) is a significant viral pathogen that affects several plant species within the Solanaceae family. As a member of the Potyvirus genus, it causes systemic infection that disrupts plant metabolism and physiological functions, posing a serious threat to the production of tamarillo (tree tomato) and related horticultural crops worldwide.

The primary host of this virus is Solanum betaceum, commonly known as tamarillo. However, the virus also affects other important solanaceous plants, including tomatoes and pepino. These host plants often act as reservoirs, maintaining the viral population in the environment, which significantly complicates the management and eradication of the pathogen in affected agricultural regions.

Symptoms of the infection typically include characteristic mosaic patterns, mottling, and chlorosis on the leaves. In many cases, these symptoms are accompanied by leaf distortion, curling, and a general reduction in plant vigor. Effective management of Tamarillo mosaic virus relies strictly on prophylactic and cultural control measures since there are no chemical treatments available to cure an infected plant:

  • Monitor plantations frequently and perform roguing of any symptomatic plants to prevent secondary spread.
