Bidens mosaic virus (BiMV) is a viral pathogen classified within the Potyvirus genus, family Potyviridae. As a member of the potyvirus group, it consists of flexuous rod-shaped particles that replicate within the cytoplasm of host plant cells, causing systemic infection and physiological stress.

The host range primarily includes members of the Asteraceae family. While it is naturally hosted by Bidens pilosa, the virus frequently crosses over to economically important crops such as lettuce and various ornamental plants, leading to significant economic losses in greenhouses and field productions.

Symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic mottling, mosaic patterns, leaf distortion, and vein clearing. Severely infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, reduced leaf size, and lower overall vigor, which severely compromises the marketability of ornamental flowers and the yield of leafy vegetable crops.

The transmission mechanism of this virus is primarily non-persistent and mediated by aphid vectors. Aphids acquire the virus particles while probing infected tissues and can transmit the pathogen to healthy plants within seconds. This rapid transmission makes the control of vector populations crucial during the early stages of plant growth.

Management strategies focus on breaking the disease cycle and vector control. Key measures include the elimination of weeds that serve as alternate hosts, the use of insecticides to suppress aphid populations, and the implementation of strict hygiene practices in nurseries. Currently, there are no curative chemical treatments for infected plants, making preventative measures the only effective solution.
