Bidens mosaic virus, classified under the Potyvirus genus, is a specific viral pathogen affecting plants within the Asteraceae family. As a member of the Potyviridae family, it utilizes a single-stranded RNA genome to reprogram host cell functions, leading to systemic infection across the entire plant organism.
The primary hosts of this virus are species belonging to the Bidens genus. These plants often act as asymptomatic or symptomatic reservoirs in the wild, facilitating the persistence of the virus in the environment and allowing it to spread to cultivated areas or ornamental gardens located nearby.
Symptoms typically include foliar mosaic patterns, chlorotic mottling, and, in severe cases, severe leaf deformation or stunting of the plant. The viral infection interferes with normal photosynthetic processes, which directly results in reduced biomass production and impaired reproductive capabilities of the host plant.
