Pepper mosaic virus

Potyvirus capsianuli is a severe phytopathogenic virus belonging to the family Potyviridae, known as the causative agent of pepper mosaic disease. This virus triggers systemic infection, causing physiological disorders that impede the development of the plant and disrupt its energy-producing pathways. The virus thrives within the host's vascular system, leading to widespread cellular stress.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are species within the Capsicum genus, including sweet and hot peppers. While these crops suffer the most, the virus can also persist in various weed species belonging to the Solanaceae family, which serve as reservoirs for the pathogen during off-seasons. Understanding these host dynamics is crucial for effective farm management.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as typical mosaic patterns, alternating between light and dark green patches on the leaves. As the disease progresses, leaves may become distorted, crinkled, or exhibit stunted growth. Fruits affected by the virus often show uneven development, discoloration, and a significant reduction in overall market quality and yield potential.

Transmission occurs mainly through insect vectors, primarily aphids (Aphididae), in a non-persistent manner. The virus can also spread mechanically during routine agricultural practices, such as pruning, staking, or harvesting, where the virus is transferred via infected sap on tools or hands. Managing these vectors is the primary hurdle in preventing the spread of the disease.

Since there are no curative chemical treatments for viral diseases, management focuses on strict preventative measures:

• Implementing integrated pest management (IPM) to control aphid populations.
• Selecting pepper varieties with proven resistance or tolerance to viral pathogens.
• Ensuring thorough weed management to eliminate potential viral reservoirs.
• Strict hygiene protocols, including disinfecting tools between plants.
• Early detection and roguing (removal) of symptomatic plants to minimize infection spread.
