Description
Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV), belonging to the genus Potyvirus, is the most limiting factor in papaya production worldwide. As a systemic plant disease, it causes significant physiological disruptions, leading to severe stunted growth and complete yield failure in susceptible cultivars.
The host range of this virus is notably broad, primarily affecting plants in the Caricaceae and Cucurbitaceae families. While the impact on papaya is the most economically devastating, the virus also targets important vegetable crops like pumpkins, squash, and cucumbers, making cross-contamination a major concern for diversified agricultural systems.
Key symptoms include systemic mosaic patterns on leaves, leaf distortion, and oily streaks on the stems. The diagnostic symptom is the presence of yellow or green ring-like spots on the fruit skin, often associated with bumps and surface irregularities, which render the fruits unsalable.
Transmission occurs primarily through aphid vectors in a non-persistent, non-circulative manner. The virus particles are acquired by aphids through superficial probing of infected tissues and are transmitted to healthy plants almost immediately. The speed of transmission makes it exceptionally difficult to control through insecticides alone.
Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize viral spread. Current control practices include:
- Cultivating virus-resistant or tolerant transgenic papaya varieties;
- Implementing strict sanitation programs by removing and destroying symptomatic plants;
- Maintaining weed-free buffers around fields to reduce local virus reservoirs;
- Using reflective mulches to deter aphid activity;
- Optimizing planting times to avoid peak populations of aphid vectors.
