Description

Onion yellow dwarf virus (OYDV), a prominent member of the Potyvirus genus, is a devastating viral disease that impacts onion and garlic production globally. The virus disrupts the plant's metabolic functions, leading to reduced photosynthesis and severely stunted development of the crop.

The virus primarily infects species of the Allium genus, including common onion, shallots, and leeks. It is a systemic disease that colonizes the plant's vascular tissue, ensuring that all parts of the plant, including the bulb, are affected, which facilitates the transmission to future generations via infected sets.

Symptoms are distinct and often manifest as chlorotic streaks or yellow stripes along the leaves. As the infection progresses, the leaves lose their turgor, become crinkled or curled, and eventually collapse. Infected plants usually show significant dwarfism, and the bulbs fail to reach their full potential size, leading to significant yield losses.
