Chicory mosaic virus (ChiMV) is a significant plant pathogen classified within the genus Potyvirus. It infects plants at the cellular level, causing systemic diseases that affect the growth, physiology, and overall yield of various chicory varieties and related botanical species.

The primary hosts for this virus are members of the Asteraceae family, most notably Cichorium intybus. The virus can infect both leafy salad varieties and root chicory, causing substantial economic losses in commercial farming operations worldwide.

Symptomatology involves distinct mosaic patterns, characterized by chlorotic patches, leaf mottling, and irregular yellowing of the foliage. Severe infections can lead to leaf curling, stunted plant height, and poor development of roots, which effectively renders the crop unsuitable for high-quality production standards.

The virus is primarily transmitted by aphids, which act as non-persistent vectors. This means the virus adheres to the insect's mouthparts and is transmitted during brief probing sessions on healthy plants. Because the transmission is rapid, even low populations of aphids can lead to widespread viral outbreaks within a field.

Management of the virus is challenging since there are no direct chemical cures for systemic viral plant infections. Control strategies focus on preventative measures:

  • Strict aphid population control using targeted insecticides.
  • Removal and destruction of infected plant material and potential wild host weeds.
  • Implementation of field isolation to prevent virus spread from older or infested crops.
  • Using certified healthy seeds or planting material to ensure the starting crop is free from the pathogen.
