Potyvirus citrullimoroccense is a significant plant pathogenic virus belonging to the Potyvirus genus, known for its detrimental impact on cucurbit crop production worldwide. This virus is characterized by its rapid transmission and ability to cause severe systemic infections, leading to substantial yield losses in agricultural systems.
The host range of this virus primarily includes members of the Cucurbitaceae family, such as watermelon, melon, cucumber, zucchini, and pumpkin. These crops are highly susceptible throughout their entire growth cycle, with younger plants often showing more severe symptoms if infected at an early stage of development.
Symptomatology typically involves mosaic patterns of light and dark green areas on the leaves, accompanied by leaf curling, distortion, and significant stunting of the vines. In fruits, the infection manifests as mottled patterns, bumps, and deformities, significantly reducing their commercial value and overall quality for processing or fresh consumption.
Transmission occurs predominantly via various aphid species in a non-persistent, stylet-borne manner.
