Description
Pathogen and disease type. Clitoria mosaic virus (ClMV) is a viral pathogen classified within the genus Potyvirus. It functions as a systemic plant disease, disrupting normal physiological processes and interfering with plant development. The virus relies on vectors or mechanical transmission to move from host to host, establishing itself within the plant vascular system.
Susceptible crops. The primary host is Clitoria ternatea (butterfly pea), a valued ornamental and forage legume. However, the virus has the potential to infect various other legume species, making it a significant concern for nurseries and agricultural fields where diverse leguminous crops are grown in close proximity.
Symptoms and signs of infection. Infected plants typically exhibit classic mosaic patterns, characterized by an irregular mix of light and dark green areas on the foliage. Additional symptoms may include leaf distortion, curling, stunted growth, and a noticeable reduction in the production of flowers and subsequent seed pods, which compromises both aesthetic and economic value.
Development and impact. The transmission of the virus is closely tied to the lifecycle of its insect vectors, particularly aphid species. When these insects feed on infected tissue, they acquire the virus and transmit it to healthy plants. The economic impact is substantial, as infected crops show reduced vigor, decreased biomass, and a significant yield loss in seed production.
Management and prevention measures. Since there is no cure for established viral infections, management focuses on strict preventative strategies. These include the procurement of certified disease-free seeds, the implementation of rigorous vector control programs using systemic or contact insecticides to limit aphid populations, and the prompt rogueing (removal and destruction) of any symptomatic plants to stop the virus from spreading throughout the field.
