The causative agent of this disease is Potyvirus commelinae, which belongs to the Potyvirus genus, known for its thread-like viral particles. This virus acts as an obligate parasite, infecting the host plant's cells and hijacking their metabolic processes. It is recognized as a significant viral pathogen that affects the structural integrity and growth physiology of susceptible plants.

The primary host for this virus is the dayflower (Commelina communis), which acts as a major reservoir of the pathogen. However, the virus can also infect various ornamental species and certain monocots. Due to its wide distribution in weeds, it poses a constant risk to neighboring agricultural crops and gardens that are not properly maintained.

Symptoms often manifest as distinct chlorotic mosaic patterns, mottling, and yellow streaking on the leaf surface. Affected plants may show stunted growth, distorted leaf shapes, and reduced vitality. In advanced stages, the plant's overall photosynthetic capacity is severely impaired, resulting in lower yields or decreased flower production in ornamental species.

The transmission of the virus is primarily mediated by aphid species, which pick up the virus from infected plants and transmit it to healthy ones through their stylets during feeding. Environmental factors, such as warm temperatures and high humidity, favor the proliferation of these vectors, thereby accelerating the spread of the disease throughout the field.

Management of the disease must be proactive, as there are no chemical pesticides capable of curing a viral infection once a plant is infected. Effective control strategy includes:

  • Rigorous weed management, particularly the removal of Commelina species near crop zones.
  • Strategic control of insect vectors using appropriate insecticides to reduce aphid populations.
