Description
The causative agent of this disease is Potyvirus croci, a member of the Potyvirus genus. This viral pathogen invades the plant cells, disrupting metabolic activities and interfering with the transport of nutrients. The virus survives within the infected corms during the dormancy period, ensuring its persistence in the soil and storage areas.
The primary host for this virus is the crocus (Crocus) species. While it is highly specific to these bulbous plants, the damage can be extensive in commercial nurseries and private gardens alike. Infected corms serve as the primary reservoir for the virus, meaning that subsequent generations of plants propagated from these corms will likely also be infected.
Visible symptoms typically include mottled leaves, yellow or light green streaks, and systemic mosaic patterns. During the blooming phase, the virus often induces flower breaking, where the petals show irregular color patches or white streaks that deviate from the normal cultivar phenotype. Over time, the plant exhibits stunted growth, reduced vigor, and a decline in the size and quality of corms.
Transmission occurs primarily through aphid vectors that feed on infected sap and carry the virus to healthy plants. Additionally, the virus is spread mechanically during the corm division process. If pruning shears or knives used on an infected plant are not properly sterilized before moving to the next one, the infection can spread rapidly throughout the collection.
Effective management requires strict phytosanitary practices, starting with the immediate removal and disposal of any infected plants to stop the source of inoculum. Prevention measures must focus on controlling aphid populations using systemic insecticides and ensuring the rigorous disinfection of gardening tools with alcohol or appropriate chemical solutions. Always source planting material from reputable, virus-tested suppliers.
