Description
Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Potyvirus that primarily affects crops within the Cucurbitaceae family. It is recognized as one of the most destructive viral diseases for commercial vegetable production, causing severe economic losses annually worldwide.
The virus infects a wide range of cucurbits, including zucchini, summer and winter squash, cucumbers, pumpkins, and melons. Once a plant is infected, the virus spreads systemically through the vascular tissues, affecting the plant's metabolic functions and overall development from the point of initial entry to new growth.
The disease is characterized by distinct symptoms such as severe leaf mosaic, yellowing, and vein banding. Infected plants often show stunted growth, distorted leaf shapes, and reduced flowering. The fruit itself displays significant deformities, including wart-like bumps and irregular shape, which severely impacts marketability.
Transmission occurs most frequently via aphid vectors in a non-persistent manner, meaning aphids can acquire and transmit the virus within seconds of feeding. Because the virus does not persist for long in the vector, the primary mode of spread involves short-distance movement of aphids from reservoir weeds or previously infected crops to new, healthy seedlings.
Management strategies focus on prevention, as there is no cure for viral infections once established. Recommended practices include planting resistant or tolerant cultivars, implementing strict weed control to remove potential viral hosts, and utilizing reflective mulches or insecticidal sprays to reduce aphid populations. Maintaining a rigorous sanitation protocol for equipment and tools is also essential.
