Cyrtanthus potyvirus is a viral plant pathogen classified under the Potyvirus genus. It is a systemic virus known to infect various ornamental plants within the Amaryllidaceae family. The pathogen disrupts the cellular metabolism of the host, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity and overall physiological decline in the affected plants.

The primary hosts for this virus include various species of Cyrtanthus, Hippeastrum, and Amaryllis. These plants are susceptible throughout their growth cycle. Once a plant is infected, the virus spreads to the bulbs, making it extremely difficult to eradicate, as the pathogen persists within the plant tissue even after the leaves have withered.

The characteristic symptoms of the disease include leaf mosaic patterns—intermingled light and dark green areas—and sometimes chlorotic striping. Infected plants frequently exhibit stunted growth, reduced flower production, and deformed foliage. In severe cases, the bulbs themselves may become soft or necrotic, leading to the eventual death of the plant specimen.

Transmission occurs through several vectors, most notably aphids, which acquire the virus while feeding on infected sap and transfer it to healthy tissues. Mechanical transmission is also a significant concern, often occurring during gardening practices such as pruning, dividing bulbs, or cleaning tools that have been in contact with infected sap without proper sanitization.

Management and prevention focus on limiting the spread of the virus, as there are no direct chemical cures for infected plants. Recommendations include:

• Rogueing: Immediately removing and destroying infected plants to prevent secondary transmission.
• Pest management: Implementing strict aphid control using recommended insecticides to reduce vector populations.
