Description
Dasheen mosaic virus (DsMV), classified within the genus Potyvirus, is one of the most prevalent and economically significant viral pathogens affecting plants in the Araceae family. This virus has a wide host range, posing a threat to important food crops like taro (Colocasia esculenta) as well as popular ornamental plants, including Dieffenbachia, Anthurium, Caladium, and Spathiphyllum.
The primary symptoms of the disease manifest as characteristic mosaics, feathering, or vein banding patterns on the leaves. Infected plants often show distorted, stunted growth and asymmetrical leaf development. While symptoms may be subtle in some cultivars, environmental stress can trigger more severe visible expressions, which often lead to premature leaf senescence and reduced photosynthetic efficiency.
The virus is transmitted in a non-persistent manner by various aphid species that acquire the virus after feeding on infected plant sap. Furthermore, mechanical transmission is a major issue in commercial production and home gardening, occurring through contaminated vegetative propagules (tubers, rhizomes) and the use of non-sterilized tools during pruning, dividing, or harvesting, which facilitates the spread of the pathogen.
In terms of agricultural and horticultural impact, DsMV causes significant losses by reducing tuber yields and lowering the commercial grade of ornamental crops. The infection compromises the plant's physiological vigor, making it more susceptible to secondary pathogenic infections and environmental stressors. This chronic nature of the disease makes it a persistent challenge for plant health management programs.

It is crucial to utilize virus-indexed or tissue-cultured propagation material to ensure the initial health of the crop.
