Description

Datura mosaic virus (DMV) is a viral pathogen belonging to the Potyvirus genus, known for causing significant damage to plants within the Solanaceae family. As a systemic virus, it integrates itself into the host's vascular system, causing chronic infection that disrupts normal physiological processes. Its presence is often associated with significant economic losses in regions where susceptible crops are grown.

The host range of the virus includes common weeds like Datura stramonium as well as cultivated crops such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and tobacco. Because these plants serve as reservoir hosts, the virus can persist in an environment throughout the year, especially in tropical and temperate regions where insect vectors are active during the warmer seasons.

Symptoms of infection are diverse and depend on the host plant, but generally include mosaic patterns (mottling), vein clearing, and chlorosis on the leaves. In more severe cases, growers may observe leaf distortion, crinkling, and significant stunting of the plant's overall growth. This reduction in leaf area directly impairs the photosynthetic capacity, leading to poor fruit development and reduced yields.

Transmission occurs predominantly through aphid vectors in a non-persistent manner. This means that aphids can pick up the virus from an infected plant after feeding for just a few seconds and transmit it to a healthy plant almost immediately. Furthermore, mechanical transmission is a common risk during routine agricultural practices such as pruning, thinning, or grafting, where infected plant sap can easily contaminate tools.

Management of the virus relies heavily on integrated pest management (IPM) practices, as there are no direct chemical cures for plant viruses. Key prevention strategies include:

  • Rigorous weed control to eliminate alternative hosts around the cultivation area.
  • Monitoring and managing aphid populations using selective insecticides.
  • Implementation of strict sanitation protocols for all agricultural tools.
  • Selection of virus-free planting stock and resistant varieties.
