Description
Sunflower potyvirus (Potyvirus heliannulabis) is a viral plant disease caused by a pathogen belonging to the Potyviridae family. As an obligate parasite, the virus relies on the host plant's cellular machinery to replicate, causing systemic infection that disrupts the plant's metabolic and physiological processes.
The virus primarily affects sunflower crops (Helianthus annuus), though it can also persist in various wild plants within the Asteraceae family. Its presence in agricultural fields poses a significant challenge, as viral infections in sunflowers can lead to substantial yield losses if the spread is not contained early in the season.
Key symptoms of the infection include mottling, mosaic patterns on foliage, chlorosis, and leaf distortion. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth and reduced vigor. In later stages, the development of the sunflower head is frequently compromised, resulting in malformed seeds or reduced seed filling, which directly impacts the economic value of the harvest.

Outbreaks are most common when environmental conditions favor the rapid proliferation of aphid populations and when reservoir weeds are present in or near the crop fields.
The economic impact of this disease is significant, as there are no chemical agents available to cure already infected plants. Therefore, management focuses on minimizing the spread through strategic agricultural practices:
