Hyacinth mosaic virus is a viral pathogen classified within the genus Potyvirus that primarily affects the growth and aesthetics of Hyacinthus orientalis. Like other potyviruses, it is an obligate parasite that relies on the host's cellular machinery to replicate, causing systemic infection throughout the entire plant, including the bulb.

The host range is mainly focused on hyacinths, but the virus can persist in the bulbs for extended periods, serving as a primary source of inoculum for subsequent seasons. Infected bulbs show no visible symptoms during the dormancy period, which complicates the detection of the disease before the planting season begins.

The primary clinical signs of the disease are characterized by chlorotic streaks, mottling, and mosaic patterns on the foliage. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced vigor, and poor flower quality. Over time, the virus reduces the bulb's storage capacity, leading to smaller, distorted blooms and eventually the total collapse of the plant's health.

Transmission occurs through two main routes: insect vectors and mechanical contact. Aphids are the primary biological vectors, transmitting the virus in a non-persistent manner as they probe plant tissues for sap. Mechanically, the virus is easily spread by pruning tools, contaminated soil, or contact during plant division, making sanitation a critical aspect of plant management.

Management of Hyacinth mosaic virus requires an integrated approach because there is no cure for established viral infections. Prevention is key: growers should source only certified virus-free bulbs, implement rigorous vector control using insecticides to reduce aphid populations, and sanitize all tools with bleach or high-percentage alcohol between handling individual plants.
