Pathogen and Disease Type: Impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV) is a destructive plant virus belonging to the genus Tospovirus. It is a systemic infection that colonizes the plant's vascular tissues, causing severe physiological disruption, reduced vigor, and often irreversible necrotic damage to the infected tissues.

Host Range: This virus has an exceptionally wide host range, infecting hundreds of plant species. It is particularly problematic for ornamental greenhouse crops like impatiens, petunias, cyclamens, and begonias. Additionally, it causes significant damage to vegetable crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and lettuce in indoor cultivation environments.

Symptoms and Signs: Symptoms are highly variable and may resemble other diseases, often including necrotic ringspots, chlorotic mottling, mosaic patterns, and line patterns on leaves. In severe cases, the virus induces stunting, leaf distortion, and death of growing tips, which can lead to the total collapse of the plant.

Development and Spread: The virus is transmitted exclusively by thrips, primarily the Western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis). The virus is acquired during the larval stage and transmitted by adults. High temperatures and the presence of weeds that act as alternate hosts facilitate rapid transmission throughout a greenhouse environment.

Harmfulness and Preventive Measures: INSV causes substantial economic losses by ruining crop marketability and requiring the destruction of infected batches. Effective management focuses on strict exclusion strategies, including:

  • Rigorous monitoring and management of thrips populations using insecticides and sticky traps.
  • Source inspection of all incoming plant materials.
  • Sanitization and removal of symptomatic plants to reduce inoculum.
  • Control of greenhouse weeds that harbor both the virus and the vector.
