Description
Iris severe mosaic virus (ISMv), belonging to the Potyvirus genus, is a significant plant pathogen that affects various iris species worldwide. As a systemic disease, it impacts the entire vascular system of the plant, causing chronic infection that persists throughout the life cycle of the host. The virus is economically damaging, especially in commercial bulb production.
The primary hosts for this virus are species within the Iridaceae family, particularly bearded irises and Dutch irises. The pathogen survives in dormant bulbs and rhizomes, which acts as a primary source of infection in new seasons. Without proper management, the virus can spread rapidly through an entire field or garden bed, leading to significant yield losses and decline in plant quality.
Symptoms are most visible during the active growth phase in spring. Affected leaves typically show light-green or yellow streaking, mottling, or mosaic patterns. The flowers often exhibit color breaking, characterized by irregular spots or stripes that contrast with the natural petal color. Severe cases result in stunted plant growth, reduced bloom size, and deformed foliage.
The virus is primarily transmitted by aphids in a non-persistent manner, meaning the insect can acquire and transmit the virus within seconds of feeding. Because the virus does not require an incubation period in the vector, aphid outbreaks are highly dangerous. Mechanical transmission also occurs during gardening activities, such as dividing infected rhizomes or pruning using contaminated tools.
Management focuses on strictly preventative measures since there is no cure for the viral infection. The standard approach includes rogueing and destroying symptomatic plants, implementing rigorous aphid control programs with systematic insecticides, and ensuring proper sanitation of all gardening equipment. Growers should strictly source certified virus-free bulbs to prevent the introduction of ISMv into their gardens.
