Description
Kalanchoe latent virus (KLV), a member of the Potyvirus genus, is a significant pathogen affecting various species of Kalanchoe. As a systemic plant virus, it infects the host on a cellular level, compromising the physiological health of the plant and often leading to long-term decline in vigor and aesthetic value.
The host range is primarily focused on the Kalanchoe genus. In commercial horticulture, the virus is most commonly introduced into clean stocks via infected cuttings. Because the virus is systemic, every part of the propagated plant becomes a potential source of infection for an entire crop, making early detection vital for production nurseries.
Symptoms are often subtle, manifesting as chlorotic spotting, vein clearing, or a faint mosaic pattern on the leaves. Under certain environmental conditions, these signs may become more pronounced, causing leaf distortion or stunted growth. Because many infections are latent, a plant may appear healthy while actively shedding the virus to neighboring specimens.
Development and spread are primarily driven by mechanical transmission and insect vectors. Aphids play a crucial role in transmitting the virus from plant to plant in greenhouse environments. Furthermore, contaminated cutting tools and regular handling of plants in high-density cultivation areas facilitate the rapid movement of the virus throughout the crop.
There is no chemical cure for Kalanchoe latent virus; therefore, disease management is focused on prevention and sanitation. Growers should strictly implement virus-indexing programs for mother plants, control insect pest populations, and sterilize all cutting tools with appropriate disinfectants (such as 70% ethanol or bleach solutions). If an infection is confirmed, prompt removal and destruction of the affected plant are the only effective measures to contain the outbreak.
