Description

Konjac mosaic virus (KoMV) is a viral pathogen belonging to the Potyvirus genus, known for causing significant economic losses in the cultivation of Amorphophallus konjac. As a member of the Potyviridae family, the virus utilizes a non-persistent transmission mechanism, making it highly effective at spreading throughout localized fields of host plants.

The primary host for this virus is the konjac plant, a tuberous crop widely valued for its glucomannan content. While specific to certain Aroids, the infection pressure can be immense in regions where intensive farming practices are employed, particularly in East and Southeast Asia, leading to severe yield reductions and loss of tuber quality.

Visual symptoms of infection typically manifest as distinct mottling and mosaic patterns on the leaves. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, leaf deformation, and a reduced capacity for photosynthesis. In severe cases, the entire plant structure is compromised, leading to smaller, distorted tubers that are economically unviable for processing or consumption.

Transmission occurs primarily through aphid vectors in a non-persistent manner, meaning the virus is picked up and transmitted within seconds of probing. Furthermore, infected planting materials, such as corms, act as the primary reservoir for the virus. Mechanical transmission via contaminated tools during field maintenance also contributes to the horizontal spread of the disease.

Managing KoMV requires an integrated approach. The most effective strategy involves the use of virus-free, tissue-cultured planting materials. Farmers should also implement strict aphid management programs using biological or chemical control methods. Additionally, regular field inspections to rogue (remove) infected plants early in the season are crucial to preventing the epidemic spread of the virus within a crop stand.
