Description
Lettuce mosaic is a systemic viral disease caused by the Lettuce mosaic virus (LMV), a member of the Potyvirus genus. This pathogen is one of the most economically significant constraints in lettuce production worldwide, capable of affecting both field-grown and greenhouse crops.
The disease primarily attacks the genus Lactuca, including various types of lettuce such as romaine, iceberg, and butterhead. In addition to cultivated plants, several weed species act as reservoirs, maintaining the virus in the environment between planting seasons.
Initial signs of the infection include chlorotic mottling, mosaic patterns, and vein clearing on the foliage. As the disease advances, symptoms progress to severe leaf distortion, stunting of the entire plant, and necrotic spots, which drastically reduce the market quality of the harvested produce.
Transmission occurs through two main routes: seed transmission, which introduces the primary inoculum into the field, and aphid-mediated transmission. Several aphid species, notably Myzus persicae, pick up the virus from infected plants and spread it rapidly to healthy neighboring plants in a non-persistent manner.
Management of the virus relies on an integrated approach. The most critical step is planting virus-free, tested seeds. Furthermore, growers should implement rigorous weed management programs to eliminate alternative hosts and utilize integrated pest management (IPM) to maintain low populations of aphid vectors throughout the growing cycle.
