Mallow mosaic virus (Potyvirus malvae) is a viral pathogen classified within the Potyvirus genus, known for causing systemic infections in plants. The virus is an obligate parasite that hijacks the cellular machinery of the host, leading to disrupted nutrient transport and impaired photosynthetic activity. It remains a significant concern for both professional nurseries and home gardeners cultivating members of the Malvaceae family.

The primary hosts of this virus are plants within the Malvaceae family, including common garden mallows, hollyhocks (Alcea), and various wild mallow species. By infecting these hosts, the virus significantly weakens the plants, making them more susceptible to secondary fungal infections and environmental stressors, which eventually leads to the decline of the entire population in an infected area.

Symptoms are typically characterized by a distinctive mosaic pattern on the leaves, featuring alternating shades of light green and yellow. Advanced stages of the disease manifest as severe leaf distortion, curling, and stunted shoot development. Flowering is also significantly impacted, resulting in reduced blossom count, smaller flower size, and potential color breaking, which diminishes the ornamental value of the plants.

Transmission of the virus occurs predominantly through sap-sucking insects, such as aphids, which acquire the virus from infected plants and transmit it during feeding. Mechanical transmission is another critical route, occurring through contaminated gardening tools, pruning equipment, or physical contact between plants. The persistence of the virus in infected plant tissues throughout the growing season ensures that the disease remains an ongoing threat.

Management of the virus relies entirely on prevention, as there are no chemical agents capable of curing established viral infections. Key strategies include:
