Description
Narcissus degeneration virus (NDV) is a destructive plant pathogen belonging to the Potyvirus genus. It causes chronic systemic infections that lead to a progressive decline in plant health, vigor, and decorative quality, commonly referred to as the «degeneration» of the narcissus crop.
This virus primarily infects plants of the Narcissus genus. Transmission occurs via non-persistent aphid vectors, which pick up the virus while feeding on infected tissue and transmit it rapidly to healthy plants. Additionally, the virus spreads through contaminated gardening tools used for pruning or bulb division.
Common symptoms include leaf chlorosis characterized by streaks or mosaic patterns. Infected plants often show significant stunting, leaf curling, and malformation of the flower buds. The blooms themselves may appear streaked, reduced in size, or fail to open properly, drastically lowering the plant's aesthetic value.
The development and spread of the virus are accelerated by favorable conditions for aphid populations and the use of infected bulb stocks. Because the virus is systemic and persists within the bulb throughout the plant's lifecycle, it is easily passed down through vegetative propagation, creating a cycle of infection.
