The disease is caused by the virus Potyvirus nicotianamaculae, a member of the Potyvirus genus. It is a serious plant pathogen that acts systemically, invading the host's vascular tissues and interfering with vital metabolic functions. The virus is recognized by its filamentous morphology and RNA-based genetic material.
The primary host for this virus is tobacco (Nicotiana spp.). However, the virus exhibits a specific host range that may include various wild Solanaceous species, which often serve as latent reservoirs of the infection. These wild plants can harbor the virus through adverse conditions, allowing for recurring infections in subsequent seasons.
Typical symptoms include leaf mosaic, chlorotic spotting, ringspots, and occasional necrosis.
