Description
Tobacco vein-mottle virus (Potyvirus nicotianavenamaculae) is a plant pathogenic virus that primarily affects plants of the Solanaceae family. As a member of the Potyviridae family, it possesses a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome and causes systemic infection within the host plant, severely impacting agricultural production.
The primary host range includes tobacco (Nicotiana) species. However, the virus can persist in various wild reservoirs, allowing the pathogen to overwinter and initiate new infections in the spring when insect vectors become active.
Diagnostic symptoms of this disease include clear chlorotic banding along the leaf veins, which is the hallmark of the infection. As the virus progresses, the leaves often show mosaic patterns, curling, and overall stunting. This leads to reduced leaf size and quality, making the harvested product unsuitable for premium markets.
The transmission of this virus occurs through non-persistent vectors, primarily aphids, which acquire the virus from infected plants and transmit it to healthy ones in a very short feeding period. Mechanical transmission can also occur during field operations, where contaminated tools transfer the viral particles between plants.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach to reduce the incidence of the virus:

- Using aphid-repellent cultural practices or insecticide treatments.
- Employing certified disease-free transplants for field planting.
